A couple of my homies and I went on a little trip to Idaho. Out of the 20 or so people that were invited, only 4 of us were able to go. We stayed at Poo Bear's cabin for 3 days and 2 nights. On the first day we went to Grand Targhee snowboarding. We had about 12" of new snow the night before, so it was great.

The next day we stuck around the cabin and made a big kicker that we hit for a while until our tired and sore bodies couldn't handle it anymore.

This is one of the 4 cabins that they have up there. Notice the blanket on the wall. Robb brought all of the entertainment. He made a make shift projector screen for movies. Oh, and there was some major ping pong that happened too. We had a couple visitors. Brian came up one day, and Jaren came up one of the nights. It was good to be with everyone again. Hopefully next year we will have a better turn out.

I realize that these photos appeal to about .3% of you, but I have to post them because I am so stoked on them right now.

These 2 rods that I am featuring were built by Jory for me (blue one light in color) and our buddy Sam (the other one). Personally I think my rod is the coolest one that he has ever built, but I am biased:)

I love the lighter color (nude) of my rod, it shows the natural color of the bamboo, and the light colored wraps.....mmm that is nice.

Sam's rod

Jory makes all of his grips from scratch. Mine has box elder bark on the outside (dark ring) and the inside speckled layer is birch bark. They are flattened and cut to shape then inlayed into the grip.

I love this thing so much, it is perfect in every way. Thanks Jory!!

Sorry it took so long to put these up. It is almost impossible to take a photo of a rod, but at least you can see kind of what it looks like.

This is another creation of Jory's. I think every rod that he builds is better then the next, but I still think mine is the best. I will post more of the others in a bit, for now enjoy.

Strawberry and ice

If you know me at all, you know that I have an obsession with fishing. The times that I am not fishing, I am thinking of it, reading blogs of people that I don't even know fishing. Watching movies of other people fishing...... so Ash knows how therapeutic it is for me, so I am a pretty lucky boy that she lets me go as much as I do.

This is the 2nd time we went to Strawberry Reservoir as the ice was melting off the lake. It is by far the hottest time of the year to fish there, but at the same time it is really fricking freezing!! All 3 times that we have gone this year it has been below freezing and 30 mile per hour winds. If you dress warm it is fine.

We ended up catching about 6 each and the thing about it is that they are all quality fish. I don't think any of them were smaller than 18".

It is pre-spawn time and with all of the ice melting the fish are hungry, so here are some pics of some of the cutties we caught.

Jory came along with me and we had a grand old time.

I was flattered when a fellow Rexburgian family called and said they were going to be in town. It seems as if the stars were aligned... but in the bad way. The kids were so cute, but i think they got a little freaked out by the lighting and being in unfamiliar territory, because they didn't want to cooperate.

We tried it inside....but after a while, we left and tried to get some pics outside. As we left it started to snow pretty hard, so we had to go under the bridge. Hope you enjoy them.

So I finally got some lighting equipment, which I am so excited about. I thought we would do a quickie with Hen Dawg to try it out. It was a makeshift little setup, but I think it worked out pretty good. I am stoked to get the rest of my setup so we can do it like the pro's:)

I am so in love with this kid right now, he has his own little personality, and he gets cuter every day.

This little guy has his one year birthday in a couple of days, so we thought we would hit the streets. I think that he may be the first young toddler that I have ever photographed that has not cried during the session (I have that effect sometimes). He was so cute, check them out.

I don't have any pictures of me tearing up the floor on my blades, but I can assure you that I passed like...at least 20, 10 year olds on roller skates. I was ruling it!

This is Oli's 2nd time rollerskating and he was actually really good at it. The first time we went a couple of months ago, I was literally holding him up as his feet were flopping all over the place, he couldn't even stand up. This time he was cruising all over the place.

Ash and Hens were sitting on the table eating some nachos and cheering for everyone.

I have a really good buddy that has more talent on one hand then most people will ever have in a lifetime.

Jory and I live a couple hundred yards from each other, and spend quite a bit of time together. I think that probably at least 75% of the time that we spend together we are reminiscing about fishing trips or planning the next one. We are fishing buddies!

For several years he has been building custom bamboo fly rods, and with each one he builds he gets better and better. I am mesmerized at how much work and attention go into the construction of these detailed rods. One of the things that I respect the most about Jory is that he is a purist. He ties all of his own flies, builds all of his own rods, and would do more if he could.

Knowing the amount of time and detail that go in to crating one of these masterpieces, I could never be selfish enough to ask him to make me one, so when he offered to make me one, I was beside myself. I couldn't say yes, but I knew that it would be something that I would keep for a long time and possibly hand it down to one of my kids one day.

After many painful decisions of trying to figure out colors, styles, functional features, and lengths he has created what I think to be the perfect rod for me.

These photos are of a few days of the building process. The whole process takes as many as 100 hours to create, depending on details.

Each rod originates from a round piece of bamboo, which is stripped down into 1/4 inch strips.

This particular rod is a 2 piece, hex rod, which consists of 6 pieces of bamboo per side.

each piece after it is stripped and measured to size is cut.

Bamboo has natural joints called nodes, they are filed down to be flush
Bamboo is also fairly pliable, if it is not straight, you heat it and bend it to shape.

The process of burning the bamboo actually strengthens it and gives it character. I opted to have mine "blond".

This is a something common that you see in the process....a lot of hand tools.

once it is rough shaped, it goes into forms that he made out of wood to be hand planed down one tiny sliver at a time. You can't do to much at one time because if your splinter is too big it could extend through the piece of bamboo.
There ends up being thousands of these little doilies all over the place.

This will end up being a grip. Cork cut to shape then glued to the desired shape and color.
a tool that Jory built that assists him to plane down each little strip, when it gets close to the desired shape, he finishes it off by hand.

Every aspect and square inch of everything is measured to exact sizes so when it is put together in the end it all matches up.
After all of the nodes have been staggered, and everything has been cut to size they are glued and bound for a time.

Depending on the weight of the rod, and the "action" (how flexible it is) it is all carefully balanced with the forms that he built.
These are the dimensions that we thought would be best for my rod. Ya I don't really understand it either.
By adjusting the bolts which are staggered every 6 inches it allows the form to open and close to allow it to be bigger or smaller.

He has like a 200 gallon fish tank that houses brook trout, browns, rainbows and even a bluegill. Ya he is obsessed.
Well I don't really have any pics of my rod yet, but you can see on his blog that with the very first cast (for real) I caught a fish, then about 2 casts later I caught another. How perfect is that?

6th Water Camping Trip

My boy Jory and I spent last weekend fishing 6th water canyon. Ash was nice enough to let us go for 2 nights, so we tried to do as much as we could in a couple of days.

This is the only picture we have of the big brown that Jory caught, it flopped and swam off before we could get another picture. It was big though. This stream is really pretty small to house a fish larger than 12 inches, but we caught em'.

Not a good picture of the fish I caught, but you can see on the rock all of the caddis flies cases clinging on.

I attempted a couple of underwater photos....they weren't that good.

This photo shows the length of this rainbow that I caught. The indicator on the rod 20" hasn't been used for a while, but we used it on this trip. Biggest fish of the trip.

All of the leaves had just started changing before we got there.

My 2nd biggest fish of the trip (that I landed) this was a 17" fat cut throat.

When we started our hike we had to wade across the stream in our bare feet. It was super cold and it hurt really bad, because we had 50 extra pounds on us. I almost fell in like 10 times

Starting our hike in. We hiked in so we wouldn't see other people. We went about 3 miles, then camped.

These custom bamboo fly rods are some of the best built that I have seen. They are amazingly custom, you can have Jory build you whatever weight, and action, and weight you want, then you can customize them beyond that you want, with guides, wrap colors, grip, reel seat, etc.

This is one of the rod cases that he built for a rod. Notice the indian head nickel attached to the leather on the cap of the rod tube.

I have pretty Rad little family

This is Rob, he fell off the monkey bars 2 times, I missed catching him both times. The second fall he fell on his feet then his face, so he had sand and dirt all over his face and his lip was bleeding. It took him about 2 minutes to get over it then he was ready to play again.

I caught Ash off guard as she just got done doing a workout on the tramp, she still has her workout attire on. How embarrassing.

This day started in a bad way, and only got worse. Jess gets married on Wed. and we wanted to get some bridals to hang up for the reception, so we planned on doing it on Saturday. Knowing that it was probably going to rain we scheduled it anyway. We went to the place I last shot because it was the only place i knew that we could shoot outside in the rain.

Long story short, on my way to our location the crazies tsunami storm came through and the traffic on the freeway was going like 10 mph..... it was crazy! We hung out for a few minutes then the storm started to clear up.

Game on. We started shooting under the bridge, then moved outside as the weather got better. Jess looked fantastic, and her mom and sister really helped out a lot.
